What can acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture needles stimulate your nervous system in a way that gives your body the instructions it needs to heal itself. Acupuncture is effective for a wide range of conditions because it stimulates your body's own healing response.
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that GPs in the NHS refer patients for acupuncture for chronic pain, back and neck pain, knee pain, migraine and headaches. We think that this should be enough to make acupuncture available on the NHS for everyone with these conditions. Unfortunately, some GPs still need convincing. You can make a difference by telling your GP that you want acupuncture.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says that acupuncture can help over 100 different conditions - including neurological, gastrointestinal, gynaecological, musculo-skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, psychological, and ear nose and throat conditions - plus a few extras that don't fit into these categories, like withdrawal from medication.
The British Acupuncture Council has helpfully summarised the scientific evidence for the efficacy of acupuncture for over 60 different conditions in their Research Factsheets.
Some people use acupuncture for specific conditions. Others have treatment to help maintain good health or to improve their sense of wellbeing.
